English: Between the Bridges, Runcorn The castellated railway bridge named after the Saxon queen, Aethelfleda because the southern abutments and pier were built on the site of her castle which was erected in 915. The bridge was built for the London and North Western Railway designed by their chief engineer, William Baker, work commenced in 1863 and it opened in 1868, the first passenger train crossed in 1859.
There was no way for traffic to cross the River Mersey at Runcorn until a transporter bridge was opened in 1905, the last fare-paying trip was made on 21st July 1961. Work started on the replacement road bridge in 1956 and it was finally opened to traffic on 22 July 1961. |
