Summary
[edit]DescriptionBethlehem Hill to Hill Bridge, Bethlehem, PA (52409776486).jpg | Built in 1924, this concrete arch bridge features decorative railings, pylons at the downtown entrance to the bridge, and truss sections over the railroad lines. The bridge originally had four sections, with one section crossing the Lehigh River and connecting to South Bethlehem and Fountain Hill, with the other three sections sitting north of the Lehigh River, with one section being a ramp connecting an intersection on the bridge to the intersection of Main Street and Lehigh Street near the Central Railroad of New Jersey Passenger Train Station and two legs that connected to Main Street in Downtown Bethlehem and 2nd Avenue in Bethlehem’s West Side. The bridge was reconfigured when the Fred B. Rooney Highway, a freeway, was constructed from the Lehigh Valley Thruway to the north end of the bridge in 1966-1968, with the ramp to the intersection of Main Street and Lehigh Street removed, the leg of the bridge connecting to the West Side closed to through-traffic and converted into a parking lot, and the leg connecting to Main Street in Downtown Bethlehem reconfigured into an on-ramp for the bridge. The bridge features an arched pedestrian tunnel parallel to Main Street in Downtown Bethlehem, as well as several subtle Art Deco elements in its design. |
