Description

Built in 1940–41, this Gothic Revival-style building at 312 Wisconsin Avenue in Madison, Wisconsin, houses the congregation of Bethel Lutheran Church (see the Property Record online). It replaces an earlier church building located on Hamilton Street. The church today takes up most of its block and has grown substantially from its roots as a small Norwegian Lutheran Church founded in 1853.

Designed by Hugo C. Haeuser, the edifice features a Latin cross layout with a fieldstone exterior, a red shingle gabled roof, Gothic arched lancet stained glass windows, buttresses, an oriel window on the Wisconsin Avenue facade, a bell tower with buttresses at the corners, a crenellated parapet, and large Gothic arched louver openings, a rear wing with buttresses, a crenellated parapet, pinnacles, and tall windows, and a contemporary addition on the southwest end of the building.

The church building is a contributing structure in the Mansion Hill Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
