Summary
[edit]DescriptionBestwood Colliery winding engine house and headstocks - geograph.org.uk - 639091.jpg |
English: Bestwood Colliery winding engine house & headstocks This contains the country's only example of a vertical duplex steam winding engine. Built in 1873 at the Worsley Mesnes Ironworks, Wigan. The pit closed in 1967 and this is now preserved in situ and can be turned slowly by an electrohydraulic winch. This view shows the house to best advantage as there are no trees in the way. The engine is on about six levels inside the building and is an awesome beast. It can't be photographed in one view due to the horizontal subdivision of the building. |
