Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Beryl (Var.: Emerald)
Locality: Coscuez Mine (Cosquez Mine), Muzo, Vasquez-Yacopí Mining District, Boyacá Department, Colombia (Locality at mindat.org)
This is a gorgeous matrix specimen featuring a 2.5 x 1.2 x 1.2 cm emerald crystal perched on the side of an attractively balancing matrix. THE CRYSTAL IS AN INCH LONG!! It is so transparently clean that you can look right through it, for the upper two thirds at least. Even the bottom third is still fairly gemmy and translucent, looking in through it to the matrix beyond. It has a sharp, clean termination, smooth to the touch although with some minute ingrown matrix particles within the surface. Gem emeralds of this calibre, on matrix. This is one of two specimens from a new find, which were sold directly to me by a source in Colombia, and I got them cheaply and am passing it on. I cannot recall having as nice a matrix emerald for the price. Note as an added bonus that the matrix of massive calcite on hard rock iscovered by sparkling, glistening, needle-like crystals of selenite. This seems to be characteristic of this new find, and it is a quite unusual and attractive accent to the usual calcite matrix from here! 9.1 X 7 X 4.1 cm
