Summary
[edit]DescriptionBerwick Gunpowder Store (The Magazine) - geograph.org.uk - 911054.jpg |
English: Berwick Gunpowder Store (The Magazine) This building was specifically built in 1749 by the Board of Ordnance, as a store for the munitions to be used in the defences of the town.
It has a number of safety features built into the design, including Y-shaped air vents to prevent sparks accidentally entering, and a complete absence of iron in the structure for much the same reason. The walls are buttressed, and the roof designed in such a way that an accidental explosion would be directed upwards rather than outwards. By the fact that it's still standing, we can assume that none of these features were ever tested in anger. |
