Description
English:

Black and white photo shows the remains of a mission church structure to the left, a row of trees to the right side, and row of low shrubs in the distance.

View to the east. Note line of berry bushes and fruits lining acequia in far distance to the east of church, and the line of cottonwoods along Zapato Creek at right. The landscape at Quarai dates from the 14th century period of early settlement at the pueblo to the present, and it includes such carefully planned features as Puebloan courtyards and plazas; a Spanish atrio, cloisters and associated gardens; late Spanish, Mexican, and Territorial fields, gardens, orchards, and waterworks; and modern (New Deal) architectural and site restoration. Site analysis confirms the presence of gardens and orchards as well as extensive field cultivation. Apple and other fruit trees (plums, chokecherries) occur at the sites of old orchards and building compounds.
