Den 15de Maj 1872 var en bevæget Dag i Storthingets Historie. Den samme Sag debatteredes allerede i det fjerde Møde, under hvilket der i "Storthingstidenden" for 1872 karakteristisk staar: "Mødet hævet Kl. 1 3/4" (om Natten). Det var Eftermiddagsmøde den 15de Maj, og Galleriet var fyldt til Trængsel af et politisk interesseret Publikum. En dyb Taushed, saadan som kun sjelden indtræder i Storthingssalen, men som da ogsaa er Udtryk for det bevægede Øjebliks Andspændhed, hadde lagt sig over Salen og beherskede Galleriets Hundreder af Tilhørere.

Representant for Søndre Trondhjems Amt, Sogneprest Bernhard Ludvig Essendrop: Sammen med Ludvig Daae, Ole Richter, Andreas Sæhlie og D. Kildal hadde han fremlagt et Udkast til Henvendelse til Hs. Maj. Kongen i Anledning af den nys faldne Sanktionsnegtelse paa Storthingets Beslutning af 9de Marts samme Aar om Statsraadernes Adgang til Storthingets Forhandlinger, samt paa Grund af Regjeringens optræden i det ømtaalige Stridsspørgsmaal om Tiden for Storthingets Samvær (Prolongationssagen). Der herskede dengang inden Storthinget en temmelig bitter Stemning ligeoverfor Regjeringen.
