Summary

[edit]
Description
Latina: "Dominus de ventre matris meæ recordatus est nominis mei. Isaia 49. BERNARDI Nativitas Matri in somnis ostenditur"
English: Copperplate print by Jacobus Neeffs, 1653 in 'Sancti Bernardi Melliflui Doctoris Ecclesiae, Pulcherrima & Exemplaris Vitæ Medulla'. Scene portrays St. Bernard's mother, pregnant with him, and a dog barking beside her. It is a reference the legend reporting that Bernard's mother dreamt during her pregnancy that there was a dog, not a baby, in her womb. She goes to visit a holy man and ask his advice; he tells her that her child is destined to become a great preacher.
