BIOGRAPHY (Portuguese Language)

Frequenta uma aula de Desenho e Escultura Decorativa e, mais tarde, a Escola Livre das Artes e do Desenho, em Coimbra. Ingressa na Academia de Belas-Artes de Lisboa, em 1883.

O primeiro lugar para o Monumento a Afonso de Albuquerque (1893), erigido em Belém, marca o início da sua carreira enquanto escultor profissional.

Na sua produção monumental destaca-se o Monumento ao Doutor Sousa Martins (1904), e o Monumento a Eduardo Coelho (1904), onde se revelam as qualidades expressivas e emotivas do escultor.

Contudo, é como estatuário e autor de bustos que Costa Mota se estabelece, vivendo essencialmente da encomenda pública e da venda de obras.

Sublinham-se os bustos do Filho de José Relvas (1901), de Frei Manuel do Cenáculo (1904), de Sua Majestade El-Rei Dom Carlos (1906), de Miguel Bombarda (1911), de João de Deus (1913) ou de Malhoa (1927).

Na estatuária, são de especial referência BERNARDIM RIBEIRO (1907), OBRA ESSENCIAL DO NATURALISMO; O Cavador (1911), peça que elimina o pedestal; Maria da Fonte (1920), obra intensa e plena de movimento; ou Chiado (1925), peça que integra o espaço urbano com a personalidade jocosa do poeta e a sua gestualidade.
