Deutsch: Eckhaus Bernauer Straße 37 / Ruppiner Straße, sowie die Häuser Bernauer Straße 36-33 (v.l.n.r.), Rosenthaler Vorstadt, Mitte, Berlin
Bernauer Strasse was the most notorious part of the Berlin Wall. The buildings were right on the border. Some East Germans escaped to West Berlin through the windows in the earliest days of the Wall. At least one person died, jumping from one of the windows. The buildings were vacated and bricked up. A comment below notes that the East German government demolished the buildings along Bernauer Strasse. This began in 1963. I did not notice any demolition work on the day in August 1963, when I took this photo. |
