Summary
[edit]DescriptionBerlin, Mitte, Werderstrasse, Schleusenbruecke.jpg |
English: The Schleusenbrücke (Lock Bridge) over Spreekanal in Berlin-Mitte, built 1914 to 1916 and extended by 17 meters from 1936 to 1937, being now 24 meters long. Most noticeable are the wrought-iron railings with bronze relief medaillons, showing historic views of Berlin on the street sides and stylized compass roses on the water sides. Originally, there were four medaillons by Robert Schirmer and Otto Markert. Four other medaillons by Kurt Schumacher were added at the time of the extension. On the southwestern abutment, a memorial plaque has been placed for Schumacher, who was executed by the Nazis in 1942 as member of a Communist resistance group. The bridge was heavily damaged in WWII and reconstructed in 1951. The medaillons, all of them missing, were replaced with replicas in 1973. The bridge is designated a historic landmark. |
