Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Commercial building at Markgrafenstraße No. 55, corner of Schützenstraße in Berlin-Mitte, built 1913 to 1914 for the merchant Franz Lehmann. Architect Oskar Kaufmann, who constructed the Volksbühne (People's Theater) at the same time used a design reminiscent of his theater buildings. When the Reich Railway Company took over the building, it commissioned the construction of an annex with a similar design, built 1937 to 1940 along Schützenstraße. The Kaufmann building was damaged in WWII and the facade was reconstructed with a much simplified facade after the war. Among other alterations, the windows were reduced in size and sculptures on top of the engaged columns were removed. The buildings is now part of the "Dienstsitz Krausenstraße" of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Building and Urban Development. It has been designated as a historic landmark.
