Summary
[edit]DescriptionBerlin, Mitte, Dorotheenstrasse, Hufelandhaus 04.jpg |
English: Residential and commercial building at Dorotheenstraße No. 16 in Berlin-Mitte, constructed in 1901 for the manufacturer H. Windler. The building on Hegelplatz and Bauhofstraße carries a plaque commemorating the physician Christoph Wilhelm Hufeland, who, from 1804 to 1836, lived in an earlier house on this site; the name Hufelandhaus for the existing building derives from this fact. The building is the last remaining historic structure at Hegelplatz and stands on the site of the former builder's yard of the Berlin City Palace. The varying designs of the facades point out the diverse functions the building originally had: Whereas the wings on Hegelplatz were used for residential and commercial purposes, a manufactory was located on Bauhofstraße. The building used to have rich facade ornaments, but they were damaged in WWII and have not been reconstructed. However, the original decor of the building is pointed out by its interior where, among other elements, an oaken staircase with Art Nouveau ornaments has been preserved. The building has been designated as a historic landmark. |
