Description
English: "Hugenots-Pelican", Claire-Waldoff-Straße, Berlin-Mitte. The bronze sculpture by Michael Klein commemorates the signing of the Edict of Potsdam on October 29, 1685, and the subsequent admission of 5000 Hugenot refugees to Prussia. The sculpture stands at the former compound of the French Hospital of Berlin. It was installed in 1994 on the occasion of the anniversary of the Edict of Potsdam. The pelican is said to be a bird which takes especially good care of its offspring; the sculpture therefore symbolizes the freedom from persecution the Hugenots found in Prussia.
