L’école lyonnaise
Le plus important constructeur lyonnais monte sa première voiture en 1895 dans un atelier de la Croix-Rousse.
Il rachète l’usine Audibert et Lavirotte, à Montplaisir en 1901, mais c’est la vente, en 1905, d’une licence à l’American Locomotive Company qui va lui permettre de développer son activité et de produire en 1906 son premier camion. (Il adoptera alors pour emblème la locomotive américaine au pare-buffle triangulaire.) Bien que la production d'automobiles se poursuive jusqu'en 1939, c'est celle des véhicules utilitaires que prend le dessus, tout comme pour les autres grandes marques lyonnaises que sont Rochet-Schneider et Luc Court.
En 1978, Berliet fusionne avec la Saviem (branche « véhicules industriels » de Renault) sous l’appellation Renault Véhicules Industriels (R.V.I.). [1]
