Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The staith (shipping point) for Benwell Colliery, near Newcastle, England. The nearest tidal water was above bridge on the river Tyne where sea-going ships could not go. To load these, keelboats (sailing barges) took coal from the staith, sailed downriver, and delivered their cargo on board. By its depth in the water, ascertained from markings, the weight on board could be determined. To the left, two men in a rowing boat. Moored to the left of the staith, a couple of keelboats. The sloping wooden structure is a spout (shoot) for loading a keelboat. Further to the right is a waggon with which mines delivered coal to staiths via waggonways. The word could also be spelled staithe. Benwell Colliery was one of the more ancient mines in the district.
