Description
English: Benchmarks and graffiti on Hanley Castle church On the side of the sandstone buttresses supporting the south side of the church of St Mary's. Various scratchings including what looks like two benchmarks: the lower one real and a poor copy three courses above.

This bench mark was used during the First primary levelling, England & Wales, and was levelled with a height of 82.4820 feet [25.1405 metres] above mean sea level (Liverpool datum). It was included as a side level on the Manchester to Gloucester levelling line. The surveyor's description was :- "No. 403(a). Hanley Castle Church.
