| Description |
English: Benchmark on Spon Street bridge. Cut into the wall of the sandstone bridge over the river Sherbourne (501005 and 501037). Infilling of gaps in the stonework seems to have been done with small pieces of tile.
Benchmarks are survey marks originally made by Ordnance Survey to record height above Ordnance Datum. They have been superseded by more high-tech means of establishing height, most are no longer maintained by the OS and are diminishing in number as buildings are demolished, roads widened etc. OS benchmark information: Type CUT MARK. Description SPON END BR SE FACE. Height 82.9208. Order 3. Datum N. Verified year 1959. Levelling year (blank). Metres above ground 0.8.
