Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Bench mark on St Oswald's, Thornton in Lonsdale This is the most impressive bench mark I have ever seen to date. Larger than normal it dates to the time of the Ordnance Survey's First Geodetic Levelling, and is a side line to the Milner's Bridge to Bradford line 1842-1844. Either side of the cut mark there are the initials 'V R', which presumably refer to Queen Victoria, the monarch at that time.
