| Description |
English: Bench Mark on Grosvenor Bridge This benchmark is in the exact centre of the west face on the east side of Grosvenor Bridge, and just to the right of the horizontal line are the remains of a bolt. The website www.bench-marks.org.uk/line530 records that the bolt was used as part of the Ordnance Survey's First Primary Levelling on the line between Warrington and Pembroke Docks, between September 1851 and July 1852. The benchmark was, therefore, cut long before the lamp was installed, and the protruding base of the lamp cluster might have made it difficult for a surveying staff to be held vertically at this point. Nevertheless, the Ordnance Survey database shows that the mark was checked visually and was levelled in 1965. The name plate on the base of the lamp structure is 'Revo Tipton', a company who specialised in street lighting between the 1930s and 1970s, so it is possible that the lamp was only installed after the last levelling in 1965. The lamp itself is seen at 316802. |
