Description

BURNING GHAT BENARES.

It is here by Ihe banks of the sacred Ganges that the funeral pyres are erected upon which the bodies of Hindus are brought to be cremated in the sacred city. The pyre is heaped high, the body laid on the top. and the fire is then brought from a particular house, that of a Domra. a man of low caste, to whom the privilege of supplying the hallowing flame is reserved, and who obtains a recognised and sometimes a heavy fee for providing it. The belief of the Hindus in the sanctity of the Ganges water is universal, and modern science tends to show that the water has some peculiar propertiss which give it special value from a sanitary point of view. The fact that the period during which the Ganges was to be regarded as holy is according to the sacred books now drawing to an end, is causing some interest in India, and some perturbation among what may be called the " vested religious interests" of Benares. What would happen if the consecration of the great river ceased nobody at present seems quite to know.
