Notes Szmul Zbytkower was a jewish banker and merchant, who made his fortune as a supplier to the court of King Stanislaus Augustus as well as to the Polish, Prussian, and Russian armies. Despite his callous treatment of the poor, he is remembered as a benefactor: he ransomed many Jews from Russian soldiers during the massacre of Praga in 1794. His third wife, Judyta Jakubowicz, and their children continued the family business after his death. Reproduction of a detail of a painting from the collection of the National Museum in Poznań.
