English: Members of the Wounded Warriors Battalion gather around the Iron Mike Monument simply titled "The Marine Memorial" sculpted by Felix Weihs de Weldon, the famed sculptor of the Marine Corps War memorial in Washington, D.C. Marines, Marine civilians, and their families participate in a walking tour to commemorate the 96th Anniversary of the historic Battle of Belleau Wood, May 24. The Battle of Belleau Wood is heralded as the Marine Corps' "baptism by fire" because of the fierce fighting the Marines encountered against the Germans during the First World War. The tour started from Les Mares Farm, where troops first encountered the Germans; then visited 10 key locations of the battle including; the towns of Lucy le Bocage, and Bouresches; viewing "The Wheatfield" from the German fighting positions; through the foxholes and trenches in the forest and ended at the Iron Mike Memorial that marks the American victory. |
