Thedata on ice storms compiled by theBell System, previously referred to,have been helpful in this connection.Since the issuance of the fourth edi-tion of the Safety Code in 1926, ad-ditional data on ice and wind duringstorms have been accumulated by theelectric light and power, railroad, tele-graph, and telephone companies, all ofwhich cooperate in the preparation ofthe Code. Data on wind velocitieswere, in the main, obtained from theUnited States Weather Bureau. Inaddition to collecting data on ice de-posits on Hne wires and on the windconditions accompanying ice accre-tions, racks carrying lengths of differ-ent sizes of wire were placed at vari-ous locations throughout the countryas an aid in determining the magni- 238 Bell Telephone Quarterly OCTOBER

J., field laboratory of the Bell Telephone Laboratories, bricks are here being hung on wires to test their strength tude of ice accumulations. Figure 7shows such racks installed in 1929 atthe Chester, New Jersey, field labora-tory of the Bell Telephone Labora-tories. These are only two out ofmore than 100 located at variouspoints throughout the country by ajoint communications and railroadcommittee to study storm loading con-ditions, the work being done by theAssociation of American Railroads,Western Union Telegraph Company,Postal Telegraph Company, and BellSystem cooperatively. Similar workwas done under the auspices of the Edison Electric Institute, involvingthe installation of approximately 125racks and associated equipment fortaking observations on all formationson electrical supply line conductors.
