SYSTEMS OF LONG TELEPHONE LINES are used for voice frequency carrier telegraph systems, each ofwhich provides 12 telegraph circuits. With the growth of the cable network which covers the cen-tral and eastern part of the United States, the number of pos-sible alternate routes to which circuits connecting two pointscan be assigned has, in general, been greatly increased. Forinstance, between New York and Chicago there are two com-pletely different cable routes and two other partially differentroutes by means of which service between these points couldbe taken care of. The first of these completely differentroutes is via Albany, Buffalo, Cleveland and Toledo, and thesecond via Harrisburg, Pittsburgh and Terre Haute. Cablesinterconnecting points on these two routes make available stillother possible alternate routes. There are 63 telephone circuits between New York andChicago which are used largely for long distance calls betweenthese cities. In addition, there are ten telephone circuits
