Consideration was given to thepossibility of printing the alphabeticalInformation directory from the sameset of type used for the customer di-rectory. Type-setting Machines The intricate mechanisms in this group, which set customers individual listings, areequipped to cast hard-metal listing slugs normal wear in printing would im-pair the clarity of the type when usedfor making plates for printing the cus-tomer directory. Accordingly, theplan adopted for the first alphabeticalInformation directories provided forthe use of an additional set of listingslugs, which was maintained inde-pendently of the type used for theregular customer directory. This ar-rangement, while considered satisfac-tory at the time, required considerableduplication of operations on the partof the telephone company in main-taining printers listing copy, and onthe part of the printer in setting upand handling two complete sets oflisting slugs.
