Text Appearing Before Image:
Extent to which the cable maypermit later removal of open wireplant, and protect the remainingopen wire lines. Long distance traffic from the eastto the Pacific coast now divides about60 per cent toward Los Angeles, 25per cent toward San Francisco, and15 per cent toward the Pacific north-west. With the greatest amount oftraffic flowing toward Los Angeles,it seemed that cost factors might fa-vor a route heading directly for thatpoint. However, Los Angeles and SanFrancisco are already connected bycable, and the Pacific Company isproceeding with the installation ofsupplementary cable and 12-channelcarrier systems over that route. Stud-ies indicated that there would be nocontrolling cost advantage in routingthe transcontinental cable directly to-ward Los Angeles, as compared withrouting it toward San Francisco. An important consideration was theneed for providing additional circuitsinto Denver, the largest center be-tween the western outpost of the ex- 212 Bell Telephone Magazine NOVEMBER
Text Appearing After Image:
With Tkan^ii wd RodThe route to the west becomes definite isting toll cable network and the Pa-cific Coast, and the studies showedthat it would be desirable and eco-nomical to connect Denver to the ca-ble network within a very few years, regardless of the route to be taken bythe transcontinental cable. It ap-peared highly desirable that Salt LakeCity, the second largest city in theMountain States region and a naturalcommunication outlet for the Pacificnorthwest territory, should also beserved by the cable. From the standpoint of reliabilityof service and future maintenance costs, buried type of cable construc-tion has been favored for this project. As a part of these studies, therefore,an investigation to determine the ex-tent to which it would be practicableto bury cable was undertaken on threegeneral routes. One of these routes was fromOmaha to Sacramento via Cneyenneand Salt Lake City. Another routewas generally common to this as farwest as Salt Lake City but then di-verged southwest
