Other potential emergencies havebeen anticipated—so far as it is pos-sible for experienced telephone mento foresee and to provide against ac-cidents or other causes of interruptionto the service. Plans already exist,for example, for the restoration oftelephone service to various govern-ment buildings, hospitals, police head-quarters, railroad stations and impor-tant manufacturing plants, in casethe facilities serving these buildingsshould be damaged or destroyed. One of the most interesting itemsin the emergency program is the ex-panding use of portable radio tele-phone sets, to span temporarily linebreaks which would take a consider-able length of time to repair andwhich might be so widespread as toleave no alternative routes in service.
