The construction of these new ca-bles will be accompanied by the ex-tension of the network of broad bandtelephone transmission systems. Car-rier systems are being superposednot only on new cable facilities but onexisting cable routes. Circuits so pro-vided are of high quality and are par-ticularly well suited for use in estab-lishing alternative and protection cir-cuit routes. Each of the multi-cableroutes, as proposed, can accommo-date as many as 50 or more carriersystems, each of which will providetwelve telephone circuits. Various measures, mentioned below,have been taken to protect the physi-cal telephone plant. But above andbeyond such steps as are possible toguard against injury of any kind, thegreatest protection to the nations tele-phone service, now so vital to thedefense program, is the criss-crossingweb of wire and cable which stretchesfrom border to border and from ocean
