es. It is an entirely practicable matterto design both the wire and pole plantto withstand specified amounts of iceand wind, but it is not feasible, except in a general way, to design againstthe widely variable loads and condi-tions imposed by trees broken or up-rooted by ice and wind. The wireplant is particularly vulnerable todamage by ice-laden trees, and a greatdeal of the subscriber distributionplant is unavoidably exposed to pos-sible tree damage. An example ofthis type of trouble is shown in Figure11. The insulated wire which formsthe subscribers service connectionfrom pole to house, and which oftenmust thread its way between the treeson side-walk and lawn, is particularlysubject to damage of this type. As an example, in one severe icestorm which affected certain areas insouthern New England, New York, and New Jersey during the pastwinter, fully 90 per cent of the inter-ruptions to subscribers service weredue to trees or the branches of trees 242 Bell Telephone Quarterly OCTOBER

Relatively fewbreaks occurred in these service con-nections other than those caused bytrees. Although on account of itsstrength bronze wire is used for thehouse connection and the policy isfollowed of avoiding trees as far aspracticable, it is inevitable that somedamage to aerial house connectionsshould occur at these times. In orderto insure against interruption of serv-ice from such causes, the TelephoneCompany and the individual sub-scriber frequently cooperate to placethe house connection underground.
