In addition, a continu-ous pen register record of this in-formation is kept on a 24-hour basis.These features permit a better ad-ministration of the office than is possi-ble with the older types of toll equip-ment. The load imposed upon variousparts of the equipment must be bal-anced and carefully controlled, inorder to expedite the routing of callsthrough the new facilities. This bal-ance is achieved by an analysis ofregister readings. In addition, am-meter readings may be taken to checkthe load at any given time. Is the No. 4 System earning itskeep? This continuous record of the volume of stored-up calls is an important aid to the maintenance of satisfactory force adjustment fice and In other Philadelphia offices,or in the many cities which originatetoll calls to or through Philadelphia,all indications are that they like it,and look toward the day of more in-stallations of this type. Perhaps it is fortunate that thePhiladelphia System was placed in 236 Bell Telephone Magazine service under conditions of wartimeoverloads on our toll plant. This isa severe test, and it is clear from theresults being obtained that the No. 4layout is equal to the situation. However, in the use of intertolldialing systems, there are certain ad-vantages and economies which can-not be fully realized until such time asoffices are not operating under con-ditions of wartime overloads.
