i-ous magnitudes may be obtained fromthe collective judgment of deafenedpeople as reported in a survey con-ducted several years ago by theUnited States Public Health Service.In that survey, people with hearing losses of 25 db or higher reporteddifficulty in hearing in auditoriumsand churches. Difficulty in hearingdirect conversation when the speakeris two or three feet away was reportedby people with hearing losses of 45 dbor higher, and people with this muchloss usually need a hearing aid. Onlythose people with hearing losses of65 db or more reported difficulty inhearing telephone conversation. Combining this information withthe Worlds Fair test results indicatesthat one out of 25 persons has diffi-culty in hearing in auditoriums, onein 125 has trouble with direct con-versation, and one in 400 has suffi-cient hearing loss to cause difficultyover the telephone. SUMMARIZING RESULTS The hearing lest results were summarized by running the punched cards through this calcu-lating machine ing test at the Fairs had as much as25 db hearing loss but that 10 timesas many in the oldest group showedthis much impairment. Considering the hearing acuity atthe higher frequencies, the WorldsFair tests indicated that two out offive men between 50 and 59 years ofage showed a loss of at least 25 db at3,520 cycles per second but only halfas many women have this much loss.The tests also showed that one in 20of the group 10-19 years of age hasa loss of 25 db at 7,040 cycles persecond, whereas half of the oldestgroup have losses of this magnitude. Age and Residence Factors Ihe age of those participating inthe hearing investigation was esti- mated by the attendant from their ap-pearance.
