United States cities continue in thelead among all the cities in the world,as far as telephone facilities are con-cerned, both in actual number andin relation to population. New YorkCity, with an estimated population of7,333,000 at the beginning of 1939,had 1,632,348 telephones,—more thanany other city in the world and, infact, more telephones than in all ofFrance. Greater London is about 30per cent more populous than NewYork City, but New York City had38 per cent more telephones. Thecentral part of London, with only alittle over 4,000,000 people, had 717,-468 telephones, whereas Chicago, witha population of 3,550,000, had 962,-351 telephones, or 27.11 per 100 in-habitants, compared with 17.81 incentral London. Berlins population of 4,339,000was served by 599,911 telephones
