For most satisfactory trans-mission over the long length of coaxialcable, however, special equipment isprovided at Philadelphia to shift thefrequency band upward by about300,000 cycles. Corresponding equip-ment is provided at the Laboratoriesto bring the signals back to the videorange. The quality of the results obtainedwas so satisfactory—to lapse for amoment into the past tense—that theexperiment proved eminently worthwhile from the standpoint not onlyof the Bell Telephone Laboratoriesand the NBC but from that of thepublic as well. It is estimated thatas many as 50,000 persons in andaround New York at times looked inon the convention via this modernmiracle of television. The Long Lines Department of the A. T. ^ T. Co. installed this testboard in Convention Hall for the duration of the convention hotels and enable them to communi-cate promptly with delegates whilethe convention is in session. At various locations are twelve tele-phones connected to the privatebranch exchange serving the NationalCommittee in the Bellevue-StratfordHotel. Two others, connected to thesame switchboard, are on the speak-ers platform. The great hall is adequatelyequipped with telephones for the con- 182 Bell Telephone Quarterly JULY venience of the crowds. Supplement-ing the some half-hundred telephonebooths permanently located on thepremises is an attended pay-stationroom with twelve booths, one of whichcontains a telephone for the use ofpersons with impaired hearing. Outside the main entrance to thestructure stands an attended pay-sta-tion trailer with four booths.
