They, as well asthe men, are practical first aiders too,as typified by the following caseswhich are selected from those thathave occurred during recent months.An elderly woman fell off a bicycleand severed the artery above thetemple when her head hit the curb.A telephone operator who had takenfirst aid some three months before andwas in a nearby house was told of theaccident. Investigating, she saw twomen trying to place the woman in acar while another was attempting togive her a drink of water. The op-erator found that the arterial bleedingwas bad and suspected a skull frac-ture—which later proved correct.She checked the bleeding and thengot one of the men to hold the pres-sure point. A telephone woman was involved inan automobile accident and suffered asevered artery in her scalp. Whileher companion walked four and one-half miles over a little-traveled roadat night for assistance and transporta-tion, she exerted pressure to stop theflow of blood. Thanks to her courageand to efficient application of first aidto her own injury, she saved her ownlife. The extent to which Bell Systemwomen have engaged in first aid train-ing is also exemplified by the perform-ance of girls teams in competition with mens teams. This year, for thefirst time, girls teams in one of thecompanies entered competition in anumber of districts. A girls first aidteam solved difficult first aid prob-lems perfectly in three minutes fastertime than their competing rivals, con-sisting of five mens teams—and wonthe contest!
