Plowing Cables into the Ground 99 a second buried cable. A passagewayat least 10 feet wide is cleared, and atreel change points additional width isrequired to maneuver the equipment. The 10-foot width will permit passageof the train in rooting and plowing. However, unless the cost of clearingan extra three feet of right-of-way isexcessive, it is very desirable to havea 13-foot passageway so that the 8^-foot-wide tractor can be used fortamping, as will be discussed later.Where practicable, the trees withinthe proposed plow-trench area arepulled out by the roots in order toeliminate the interference with plow-ing which the roots would cause, andalso in order that the roots may notconduct lightning to the cable. How-ever, because of the use of speciallydesigned equipment and appropriatemethods, there have been no caseswhere the heavy cable-plow
