On Smith Island This is Main Street in Ewell. Since there are no vehicles larger than hand carls and bicycles here, this narrow highway is both safe and picturesque A. T. and T. Company devised sucha system. Many times during the past winter,often when the passage was coldestand windiest, telephone and Labora-tories men visited the islands to directthe installation of equipment and toline up the circuits. As visitors arefew on Smith or Tangier, Bell Systemmen soon became known, and eachstep of the project had its interestedaudience. Telephone Service at Last LiAST February, with the opening ofa reliable radio telephone link whichcould be used for any messages, thesetwo islands were connected with thenation-wide telephone network of theBell System through the Crisfield tele-phone exchange. The radio linkequipment consists of radio trans-mitters and receivers operating at frequencies around 160,000 kilocycles—the highest frequency in Bell Sys-tem commercial radio telephony to-day. The
