Army officers and men agree thatthe change from the broad-shoulderedsoldier operator to the slender girl isa welcome improvement. For hispart, the soldier is well pleased to betransferred to other duties. and when a major emergency shouldbe declared. This gave the telephonecompanies opportunity to make gen-eral plans for the operation of suchswitchboards when the Signal Corpsrequested. More detailed preparations weremade early in 1941, when representa-tives of the telephone companieswhich had military establishments intheir areas attended a traffic depart-ment meeting to discuss the provid-ing and training of operators, their ii; Bell Telephone Magazine JUNE housing and transportation, and otherproblems related to the operation ofthese switchboards. Soldiers such as these are released for more active duty when Bell System operators take over the handling of Army switchboards at every army establishment then inexistence, not only to determine therequirements for telephone companyoperation of the switchboards butalso to view the adequacy of equip-ment and the need for expansion andchanges in plant. Thus it came about that becauseof advance planning and cooperationwith the Army, the telephone com-panies were ready and able, beforethe smoke had ceased above Pearl Harbor, to assume the responsibility;for operating the switchboards atithose places where they were askedto step in and take over. That process is still going on—(although as the Army continues togrow it is nowadays not so much a:matter of taking over as it is ofioperating the switchboard from theday of its installation.
