9 per cent. This investment of the Long Lines Department has beenmade as a direct response to the demands for better and betterprograms over the air. This means, as far as the TelephoneCompany is concerned, that a high type of musical entertain-ment must be carried for hundreds and some times thousandsof miles to all parts of the country, without any appreciableloss in fidelity and tone. (All sudden emergencies must beforeseen and provided against, so that a listener may not bedisappointed, when he tunes in to get a particular programat a particular time.)
