Theyare safeguarded from adjacent firesby locating them on sites sufficientlylarge to provide suitable clearances, orare protected on the exterior in muchthe same manner as the larger ones. While the risk of a serious fire start-ing inside the telephone building isconsidered rather slight as comparedwith the possibility of a fire fromsources external to the building, ex-tensive measures are neverthelesstaken to equip the building with fire-fighting apparatus and to provide safeexits in the form of fire-proof stair-ways, fire towers, or fire escapes.
