As the volume ofInformation calls increased, therebynecessitating more operators, addi-tional sets of records had to be pro-vided and maintained. Under the frequently reprinted di-rectory arrangement, new directoriesfor the various cities are usuallyprinted every two weeks—althoughthe interval may vary somewhat, de-pending on local conditions. Whilea printed cumulative daily addendumis provided under this plan, the ad-dendum period is so shortened that itis practicable for operators to consultthe main Information directory firston almost all calls, with reference tothe second record—the addendum—on only a few calls. It is interesting to note that, in citiesformerly using book records, the ad-ditional cost of the frequently re-printed directories usually has been 19^2 Frequently Reprinted Directories 19

A LisTiNiji SlugOn the upper edge may be seen the type characters, which are raised and in reverse more than offset by savings in operat-ing cost. This is attributable to theshorter work time per call, which re-sults from the higher proportion ofcalls requiring only one record ref-erence. The increased speed of hand-ling calls has made it possible in somecities to defer for some time the pro-vision of additional Information posi-tions and records. Also, the compact-ness of the new records has facilitatedthe design of improved desk positionsmore conveniently arranged and re-quiring less floor space. In addition to the faster Informa-tion service made possible by the newrecords, better service has resultedfrom the increased accuracy of thenew records.
