This arrangement of recordsadversely affected the time intervalinvolved in locating telephone listings,because operators frequently found it necessary to consult one or more oftheir addenda records to obtain theinformation desired. This was par-ticularly true with increasing obsoles-cence of the customers directory. Inone large city it was found that forevery 1,000 calls handled, the opera-tors were obliged to consult over 1,800records under this plan, while withfrequently reprinted records this num-ber was reduced to less than 1,300. Use of Rotary Files HoTARY file records, both alphabeti-cal and street address, differ fromfrequently reprinted records chieflyin that they are contained in rotaryfiles instead of books, and in themethod of maintenance.
