Ideals of the Service It is this service feature of theproduct of the business whichmakes it more than an article havingmere physical qualities and which hasled to the opportunities for the kindof service exemplified by the VailMedal Awards. Those who have hadexperience in telephone work realizethat there is an esprit de corps whichhas been maintained in the business,despite enormous expansion and uni-versal usage. A SPECIAL GROUP AWARD Plaques such as this are awarded in cases of especially noteworthy public service on the pari of groups of employees where it is not possible to single out one or more persons for individual awards. This plaque was presented after the hurricane of September, 1938 stricken communities—they rise tothe human needs of the occasion, andtheir traditional spirit of service is amost important element in the reliefthey render. The operators who,sometimes in the face of personaldanger, give warning to save others,who instinctively offer urgently neededadvice regarding aid or sources ofassistance in emergencies, instil aspiritual value in the service far be-yond that which is possible in themere functioning of the inanimate in-struments through which they work. Because of these ideals of service,such efforts have sometimes led to theextreme sacrifice.
