Analogy to Life Insurance The problem of determining average service livesfor telephone plant where there is a substantial varia-tion in age at retirement is similar to that of the lifeinsurance actuary in determining the expectation ofhuman life. The recorded experience upon which thestudies of the life insurance actuary are based, coverslarge nmnbers of men. It shows, first, out of the totalnumber of individuals constituting the group underobservation how many were alive in each year of age ( 270 ) Straight-Line Depreciation Accounting Practice and therefore *exposed to the risk of dying, to use anactuarial expression, during that year, and second, howmany actually did die during each year of age. There is awell developed actuarial procedure by which a series ofsuch mortality rates by age can be converted into a lifeexpectancy for the group.
