The message center of Army field headquarters is one of the busiest offices in the Alaskan theater of operations be told the most interesting and im-portant news about these units andthe telephone men in them: the storyof hardships, tough problems de-manding expert knowledge and skillfor solution, and achievements basedon both experience and the qualities the entire unit was activated. Soonafterward, it received intensive train-ing in desert warfare when, as onemaneuver problem, it built an open-wire pole line across the MojaveDesert and helped to develop a num-ber of construction methods adapted 172 Bell Telephone Magazine SEPTEMBER to such conditions. The affiliated cadre of anotherearly unit was called to active dutyin April, 1942. Five months later,the Associated Company from whichit had come was asked to replace theentire enlisted group—as seven of the original twelve men had been selectedfor Officers Candidate School andfive had been transferred to otherduties. A week after the new menreported, the unit was on its way tothe Southwest Pacific area, where ithas won the commendation of higherofficers for the effective discharge ofmany difficult assignments—includingthe construction of several badly-needed pole lines and the rapid instal-lation and testing of the radio sets ineight newly-assembled jeeps neededfor a special mission.
