Needless tosay, these latter were eventuallyquoted verbatim, not only to retaintheir original flavor but to indicate that they were only anecdotes; for inthe main body of the text the chiefemphasis was on authenticity, and noamount of labor was spared to verifyand document every statement offact. The greatest problem of all washow many persons should be men-tioned in the story and how muchspace should be given to each one. It was a delicate matter, andseemed a formidable problem, but itwas solved, at the suggestion of thehistorian, by the simple device ofadding biographical footnotes. Origi-nally it had been planned to excludenearly all footnotes, but the historianpointed out that the history of atelephone company is a form of localhistory and should be approached assuch. In works of this kind, peopleare as important as events, and fam-ily history is one of the primary aims.
