A Blackout Warning On the evening of October 13 the telephone network re-ceived its first test in handling Blackout orders. When sixgiant bombers headed in past Cape Hatteras, the civilian-ob-server telephone network gave the defense immediate warningthat an attack was on the way. At 7:01 p.m. General Gard-ners order Blackout immediately was telephoned to ZoneMessage Centers by the Sector Message Center at Fort Bragg. Over the commercial telephone systems to telephone chiefoperators, to Blackout Chiefs in the different communities,to Broadcasting Stations WPTF and WFTC, the order waspassed along by prearranged methods.
