Apart from the advantages men-tioned, attended service permits aconsiderably more efficient use oftrunk facilities between the reserva-tion and the local central office. Italso reduces the number of telephonesneeded, since they are used more effi-ciently; i.e., the telephone is in useonly when both parties are ready totalk. large establishments will have morethan one attended location. The facilities provided at attendedlocations often include a two-positionswitchboard serving eight to twelvetelephones—although larger installa-tions with as many as five positionsand 25 telephones are being provided.Where the operating attendants can-not handle the full load, one or morenon-operating attendants are oftenadded to record calls, look up routes,rates, and telephone numbers, andcollect payment for calls.
