I car-ried a message to each from Mr. Gif-ford—that the armed services andother Government agencies couldcount on the Bell System, its peopleand its resources, to do its full partin preparing for the defense of ourcountry, or, if war came, in the win-ning of it. I asked each for sug-gestions as to how the System couldbe most useful. These purposes have dominated thethinking of Bell System people sincethat time. For many years during peace-timeall of the units of the System haddesignated appropriate administrativeofficials as principal service repre-sentatives with the regional area andshore establishments of the Army,Navy, Marine Corps, and CoastGuard, and with their headquartersorganizations in Washington.
